Are Class 4 impact-resistant shingles worth it in Texas?

In hail-prone North Texas they often are. Class 4 shingles pass the highest impact rating under UL 2218, survive hail that damages standard shingles, and many Texas insurers offer a premium discount for them. The extra cost is smallest when the roof is being replaced anyway, so price both options and ask your agent what discount applies.

The rating comes from dropping steel balls on the shingle

UL 2218 rates roofing by dropping steel balls from set heights onto the same spot. The class is the largest ball the product survives without cracking through. Class 1 is a one-and-a-quarter-inch ball and Class 4, the top rating, is a two-inch ball. Class 3 sits one step below at one and three quarter inches.

Manufacturers achieve the rating in different ways, most often with a rubberized SBS-modified asphalt that flexes on impact or a reinforced backing. Most modern Class 4 lines look like ordinary architectural shingles.

The discount is real, and it varies

Many carriers writing homeowners policies in Texas reduce the wind and hail portion of the premium for a Class 4 roof. The size of the discount differs by company, and some carriers also change how they settle claims on impact-resistant roofs. Call your agent before choosing and ask two questions: what the discount would be, and what documentation they need.

Keep the product name, the shingle wrappers or the manufacturer’s certificate, and the invoice from the installation. Those are what an agent will ask for.

The best moment to upgrade is a replacement you are already paying for

When a roof is being replaced on an insurance claim, the carrier pays for a like-for-like roof. Upgrading to Class 4 means paying only the difference in material and labor, which is a small share of the whole job.

The rest of the roof still has to be installed well. An impact rating does nothing for water getting in around a poorly flashed chimney or a badly seated pipe boot.

Related questions

Will Class 4 shingles survive any hail storm?

No roof is hail-proof, but Class 4 shingles take far larger impacts before they are damaged.

Is Class 3 worth it if Class 4 costs more?

Class 3 offers better protection than a standard shingle, but insurance discounts are more often tied to Class 4. Price both and ask your agent.
