How Gregory Group handles it.
Impact-resistant shingles are rated by how well they survive being hit. Under the UL 2218 test, steel balls of increasing size are dropped on the shingle, and the rating is the largest ball it takes without cracking through. Class 4 is the top rating, passing a two-inch ball. Class 3 passes a one-and-three-quarter-inch ball.
In a part of Texas that sees hail most springs, that difference matters. A standard architectural shingle bruises and loses granules under a hailstone that a Class 4 shingle shrugs off, which means fewer damaged roofs, fewer claims and a roof that keeps its full life after a storm.
How It Works
Inspect
Using a checklist, a trained inspector goes over the critical areas inside and out to find the source of the problem.
Educate
You get a list of any damage with photographs, a plain explanation of what needs repairing or replacing, and answers to your questions.
Perform
The same person who inspected your roof sits down with you to go over the damage and your options, including pricing and payment plans. The work then runs with a project manager on site and a magnet sweep and cleanup at the end.
The Difference
The details that decide the outcome.
The second reason homeowners choose them is money. Many insurance carriers writing homeowners policies in Texas offer a premium discount for a Class 4 roof, and a customer of ours saw a lower premium after upgrading to Class 3 shingles. The size of any discount varies by carrier and policy, so call your agent before deciding and ask what paperwork they need. Keep the product documentation from the job.
We install impact-resistant lines from the major manufacturers, including Atlas and CertainTeed, and we have upgraded roofs from three-tab shingles to impact-resistant ones and replaced storm-damaged roofs with Class 4 systems.
A Class 4 shingle only performs as rated when it is installed as a system. The rest of the roof still matters: the tear-off to the decking, synthetic underlayment, ice and water shield in the valleys, correct nailing and properly seated flashing and pipe boots. An impact rating does not protect a roof from water getting in around a badly installed vent.
The best time to upgrade is when the roof is being replaced anyway, especially on an insurance claim, because the extra cost is only the difference in material and labor between the two shingles. The inspection is free, and the estimate can price both so you can compare them side by side.

Impact-Resistant, answered.
What is the difference between Class 3 and Class 4 shingles?
Both are rated under UL 2218. Class 4 survives a two-inch steel ball without cracking and Class 3 survives a one-and-three-quarter-inch ball. Insurance discounts in Texas are most often tied to Class 4.
Are impact-resistant shingles hail-proof?
No shingle is. Very large hail can still damage a Class 4 roof, but it takes far more to do it, and the roof comes through most North Texas storms with its life intact.
How much more do impact-resistant shingles cost?
They usually add a modest percentage to the price of a replacement, depending on the product line. The free estimate can price both options for your roof.
Do they look different from regular shingles?
Most modern Class 4 lines look like standard architectural shingles and come in the same range of colors.
How do I get the insurance discount?
Ask your agent whether your carrier offers one and what they need to see, which is usually the product name and proof of installation. We provide the documentation from the job.
